Below is what we learned in October!

We are defeating Glassman!
This month our concentration has been on the Superflex curriculum and the character of Glassman. Glassman is an "unthinkable" character in the book who makes our brains inflexible. He makes our brains get upset over tiny problems and rather than think about solutions, we just "break"! The ways we defeat Glassman are to use positive self-talk, take deep breaths, change our channel, and walk away to reflect. The activities we have done this month center around this character and the strategies we have learned.

We can identify the size of a problem!
Students were given cards with different scenarios. They worked in groups to identify where the problems fell on a spectrum of 1-10.

Glassman Comic Stories

We wrote stories to identify ways that Glassman has interfered with our decisions and came up with ways for us to defeat him. In the picture to the right, a student decided to take deep breaths and use his meditation jar to calm himself down.

Outstanding October!

Each  month we do a mystery motivator that is directly tied to student behavior goals and positive reward systems. Students earn tallies during their day for showing target behaviors. At the end of the month they are rewarded with a mystery surprise if they can meet their goal! What a great month it has been!

PCC Word of the Month: Responsibility

This month our entire building focused on the word "responsibility". In my class we defined the word to mean: being accountable for what we say and do; doing what we are supposed to do; and being reliable, dependable, and committed to doing our work . We have centered many discussions on how we are responsible and what our "have to" and our "want to" jobs are. In one activity students made flowers and wrote how they feel they are responsible. Students show they are responsible daily by taking their tally sheet (positive behavior reward systems) to their courses and asking for feedback from their teachers.
